Studio Doozy

Social Mission

Studio Doozy creates accessible, upgradable and beautiful bathroom solutions for the silver age community and their families to live an independent and high-quality life. In Hong Kong, almost 60% of elderly deaths are directly or indirectly caused by falls at home or elderly residences. They often lack properly adapted homes with holistic solutions for fall prevention, which makes it difficult for the elderly to age at home.

Studio Doozy is currently working on accessible furniture for the bathroom space, as this area is one of the major falling hotspots for elderly and people with limited mobility when they execute daily functions, like using the toilet or showering.

Studio Doozy aspires to redesign ageing and believe that happy, healthy ageing at home is possible.

Business Model

Studio Doozy will have multiple streams of revenue. Initially, we will be working with a B2B model, selling individual products and add-ons. Our initial target customers are real estate companies, hotels and elderly centres. As our products not only focus on functionality and all-inclusivity but incorporate modern design, hotels and new residential properties can benefit and may be more willing to have more all-age friendly apartments and rooms. Direct sales will also facilitate faster customer feedback for quick iterations and improvements.

After the company matures, Studio Doozy will partner with elderly product distributors to expand. Lastly, the technology aspect of the toilet will be sold as a separate add-on, complete with an online interface in which a user’s vital signs information will be available online. There will be an additional option in which customers can purchase an annual subscription service that can connect them with doctors, physiotherapists, and trainers to receive personalized care and attention to their needs, based on vital signs information in the toilet. These multiple product lines will help to generate the revenue necessary to sustain and to further develop products and services.

Social Impact

In Hong Kong, almost 60% of the elderly die directly or indirectly from falling at home and the residences where they live. From those who survive, many can never fully recover, affecting the quality of living and eventually causing depression among the elderly.

In the US and China, the bathroom is in the top 2 falling hotspots for the elderly. Yet many “young old” are reluctant to implement existing adapted bathroom equipment as it makes them feel even more sick.

Given this situation, Studio Doozy is focused on creating solutions for the bathroom space. We aim to reduce the number of falls, thus reducing hospital admission and increasing a higher standard of living for a longer period of time. Additionally, we aim to increase “young old” acceptance of solutions that can prevent accidents from happening from an earlier date.

In Hong Kong, as per current law, hotels are only required to have one accessible room for every 100 rooms. This makes it very difficult for wheelchair users or users with limited mobility to book a room that is suitable for them. With our toilet solution, we will be enabling this type of facility to easily and seamlessly increase the amount of available accessible toilets benefiting users with limited mobility.

Finally, one of Studio Doozy’s greater goals is to redesign ageing. In our current society, ageing comes with the connotation of a “downgraded” living. We aim at developing solutions that change this perception and make people see ageing as an upgrade, making it easier to adapt to the physical and psychological changes that it entails.

Proposed Project for Students

We aim at working together with students to fully develop a business plan and marketing strategy for the products we are currently developing at Studio Doozy.

The following are some of the aspects that we propose to students to help us research and develop:

  •  B2B/B2C Market Penetration – strategies for marketing the products and bringing awareness to users and/or their family members.
  • Study and research the household market for accessible products and develop strategies to sell and implement our products to those target users.
  • Study and research on elderly care centres and the need for certain accessible products.
  • Partnership development strategy and short-term/long-term market penetration strategy
